If you read my blog, you know how much I love books. Cultivating a passion for reading is something I have been doing since my daughters were born! With that being said, I’m thrilled to introduce my guest blogger who happens to be my almost (gasp!) 12-year-old daughter. She recently read and reviewed an advance copy of Cici Reno #MiddleSchoolMatchMaker, due out this month from Sterling Children’s Books. Read on to find out what she thought of this book and whether it’s something you might like to pick up for your own middle schooler:
Cici Reno is a 7th grader at Alton T. Wright Middle School. At the “Back to School Campfire”, Cici’s best friend, Aggie, spots a boy she really likes, Drew Lancaster. She goes over to talk to him but she stutters and then gets really embarrassed. She really wants to talk to him, but not in person. Cici has an idea. Aggie could talk to him anonymously online. Aggie says she is a little too scared to do it, so Cici offers to talk to Drew online for her. Cici makes a Twitter account named @SeraFrost, a character from a book she likes. She direct messages Drew, and starts talking to him daily! Drew has all the same interests as Cici. They like Minecraft, The Last Token (a science fiction book) and a lot more. Aggie, on the other hand, likes makeup, mean girls and nail polish. Drew says he wants to meet @SeraFrost, so they go see the Superman movie. It is extremely awkward though because Drew hasn’t really been talking to Aggie, he has been talking to Cici. When they go on their next date, Cici hides behind a table (they are at a pizzeria) and texts her what to say. This goes on for a long time, and then, one day when Luke (Cici’s brother) and Drew are hanging out at her house, he walks past her room and sees the room she described on DM.
This book was really good! It is really exciting, funny and sad at the same time. An example is when Cici saw Drew and Aggie kiss. It was funny to read Cici’s reaction, exciting to see what she would do and sad to see her feelings get hurt. My favorite character is Cici. She is very humorous when she talks to people. She makes up puns while she is talking, like me. I finished this book in only 1 week because it was so good! I recommend this book for a quick, funny and enjoyable story!
In a Nutshell: A great choice for middle school readers, especially those who love a good story with plenty of drama.
