• island girl: nic and nellie

When I was about 10 or 11, my best friend Allison invited me to spend the night at her parents’ summer home in Westhampton Beach. Because I’d never been away from home without my family before, I was more scared than excited. My parents, in sharp contrast, saw this as an opportunity: an invitation to “summer” in the Hamptons? Who wouldn’t jump at the chance! After a bit of coaxing and a not-so-gentle nudge, my bag was packed and the next thing I knew, we were cruising the Montauk Highway in Allison’s dad’s car. By the time  we reached Dune Road, I was hooked on life out east. After a day of boating around the tranquil bay, followed by frolicking in the rough surf, we enjoyed a dinner out of delicious Chinese food (my first). By the time our weekend was done, I was sad to be going back home, but luckily had the memories to treasure. That’s why it’s so easy for me to relate to the main character in a new picture book, Nic and Nellie. Headed to a small New England island where she’ll spend the summer with her doting grandparents, Nic is a bit reluctant to leave her family and friends behind. On the opening pages, it’s clear from the vivid facial expressions and body language of Nic and her mom that she is saddened to go. But once the story unfolds, and we begin to see the welcoming home of her grandparents and the powerful affect of enjoying simple moments like watching the sun rise with her grandpa and dog, Nic settles into a routine that becomes a source of comfort. Before long, worry lines are traded in for smiles and Nic is enjoying her time without a care in the world. I loved how by experiencing new adventures, like digging through mudflats and sharing a picnic with friends on the pond, she is at peace with herself and relaxes as though this were her home. For any child who’s off to sleepaway camp or who’s ever felt a little homesick, this book deserves to be packed in their suitcase as a reminder of how exciting a new adventure can be.

In a Nutshell: A beautifully illustrated picture books that reminds us how fleeting summer can be, but how its adventures that take us out of our comfort zone can last a lifetime.
