sugar-free strolling (and schlepping): cybex by jeremy scott

When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I knew I wanted an old-fashioned pram in which to parade my new little love around town. By the time my second daughter arrived on the scene, I had grown weary of the neutral-colored baby gear I had acquired along the way. Sure, a cream-colored bouncy seat may have fit into my traditional home decor, while a steel grey car seat meshed well with my car’s interior. But at the end of the day, I found everything to be a bit…oh, how can I put it? Bor-ing. If someone had told me that those first few months of life with a newborn would be filled with lots of cat-napping, diaper changes, rattle shaking, sleeping, bathing, feeding–did we mention sleeping?–punctuated by a bunch of mini milestones, I might have done things differently, especially in the baby gear department. First-time moms who dare to be different will have no trouble showing their sense of style this season, thanks to the brand-new Cybex by Jeremy Scott collection. We got word of the line just as it was making headlines and boy, are we jazzed! Having been in the baby biz for quite a while now, we can safely say that we’ve never seen anything this awe-inspiring before! Jeremy Scott, the fashion visionary, has lent his colorful eye to an entire “Food Fight” baby gear design motif that takes “playful” to the nth degree. Soda pop duking it out with a hot dog? Popcorn kernels pummeling a defenseless burger?  A refreshing departure from an infant world saturated with ho-hum prints and yawn-inducing solids, the Cybex by Jeremy Scott is one baby line that remembers what it’s like to be a kid–and celebrates it. The Cybex by Jeremy Scott collection of strollers, car seats, a diaper bag and other accessories will be available in June.

In a Nutshell: A stroller that packs a punch. A diaper bag that defies its identity. Because now, you get to be a kid…all over again.

survival of the fittest: mutsy evo stroller

Tis the season of strollers! Spring is in full swing and summer, right around the corner. While my 4-year-old and I were in town today, I couldn’t help but notice how the sidewalks were being taken over by strollers. Nearly every which way we looked, moms were running errands with their little ones in tow, happily bouncing along. Since I review kids’ products, I’m always paying close attention to the gear I encounter on a daily basis, and I have to admit: I’m suffering from a mild case of stroller envy. When my first daughter was born, the Bugaboo was the fashionable choice and by the time my little one arrived on the scene, the pram was back in style. Amazingly, today, there are no shortage of stroller choices and the latest model from Mutsy has currently captured our attention. Appropriately dubbed EVO, this high-performance vehicle embodies just how much the baby buggy has evolved over the years. You can use it right from the beginning, thanks to its reclining seat that faces backward (ideal for newborns) or forward (for older babies looking to take in their surroundings). A full recline position lets sleeping babes stretch out with plenty of space, and there’s a footrest to provide extra comfort for tired tootsies. We really love the ultra-deep storage bin where moms can stash their diaper bag and still have room for any purchases they make along the way. Available in brown, black, white or navy, the Mutsy EVO Stroller is perfect for the mom and kid on-the-go…know anybody like that?

In a Nutshell: A stroller that knows how to get around town, and looks great while doing it.

eye candy

Have you ever had a day like this? My family and I were briskly walking the streets of midtown Manhattan when, out of nowhere, the rain came pelting down. The forecast had called for “a chance of showers,” but this was a full-blown soaker. Not only did I forego raincoats for my daughters in favor of sweet cardigans to go along with their summer finery (OK, so they were simple sundresses, but you can feel my pain), but we only had one umbrella between the four of us. While my 7-year-old and I ducked under the umbrella, my husband braved the rain with my 3-year-old strolling along. The only one who didn’t appear to be miserable was the little one, as she closed out the rest of the world by pulling her stroller’s raincover over her head. As we hurried along to our destination, I couldn’t help but think how much nicer it would be to ride under a cover that had a little more pizzaz to it. After all, a child is gazing up at the top of raincover…shouldn’t all that alone time give her a chance to set her sights on something colorful, the stuff that dreams of cotton candy and lollipops are made of? It’s why I so love the new Dylan’s Candy Bar Buggy from Maclaren. Not only does this stroller offer a smooth, comfortable ride, but now your little one can nestle right along with some sweet treats. Outfitted in a mouth-watering, candy-colored motif, this buggy boasts a rainbow-hued striped hood, coordinating seat cover and, best of all, a raincover that is a feast for the eyes as it is for the tummy. It’s one stroller that is as playful as it is practical. (And it’s not the first time we’ve seen something in the kids’ arena with the Dylan’s Candy Bar stamp on it; the limited edition buggy joins a craft/toy line from ALEX Toys that is equally enticing.) After all, isn’t it nice to feel like a kid in a candy store, especially on a drab, rainy day?

In a Nutshell: How sweet it is! A candy-colored stroller is a child’s delight–and it satisfies this mom’s craving for comfort and creativity.

Snugli Union Jack

queen mother-to-be

It’s too soon to start planning for Kate Middleton’s baby shower–her wedding day isn’t even here just yet–but it’s certainly fun to imagine her as mum-to-be some day. No doubt her baby’s nursery will be outfitted in royal finery, and her bundle of joy clothed in the lushest, most soft fabrics. But something tells me that when it’s time to step out with the future prince (or princess), the future Queen of England will be doing so in style. If we could be so bold as to suggest a couple of our favorite baby products, we’d put these on her baby shower wish list. To help navigate those London city streets with a little one, the Cybex Callisto is the way to go. This highly functional stroller converts into a stylish city pram just by snapping on a carrying cot right onto the stroller’s frame. That extra roomy storage basket lets the future mum stash away her umbrella for rainy treks or anything she picks up during her daily jaunt. And once those grey skies brighten, she can resume her fresh air walk with her baby safely tucked inside a Snugli baby carrier. We’d recommend the Union Jack model, of course, so she can pay homage to her homeland. Not only is it an eye-catching print, but the back straps are adjustable and the fabric, breathable. Because, yes, even princesses perspire.

In a Nutshell: A stroller that suits royalty and a front carrier that proclaims true patriotism? God save the Queen…

a true workhorse

Schlepping all your kid’s gear around can make you feel more like a mule than a mom. From diaper bags to sports bags, it feels like we are forever indebted to our children (shouldn’t it be the other way around?). Perhaps this visual was the inspiration behind the latest Bugaboo stroller. Aptly named the Bugaboo Donkey, this is one vehicle that aims to keep up with the demands of an on-the-go mother of multiples. With three simple clicks, this convertible stroller goes from a full-sized model for one child, to a side-by-side stroller that accommodates two, to a mono stroller yet again. No matter if you’re out grocery shopping with only your toddler and later taking a walk in the great outdoors with both kids, the Donkey works to fit your needs. It’s got the same fashionable look as the previous Bugaboo incarnations, so expect nothing less. But now there’s even more storage space with an expandable side basket, plus an underseat basket. Finally–a company that understands just how much stuff you actually lug around. See, now you don’t need that extra pair of hands after all…

In a Nutshell: When it comes to transporting two kids around town safely and stylishly, the Bugaboo Donkey simply kicks ass.
