• underwater oasis: octopus’s garden

Boy, the groundhog’s prediction was spot-on this year. It’s snowing for the eighth time this winter, but who’s keeping track anyway? Because our thoughts are easily turning to spring and beyond, we are looking for any means to transport us (mentally, at least) out of this snowbound spot and into a sunnier destination. How delightful that a new picture book with a familiar title landed on our desk. Octopus’s Garden is, in fact, based on the lyrics of the Beatles song we’ve come to know and love, and now has charming illustrations to go along with it. Readers need only turn the first page to be lured into this inviting world bubbling over with sea creatures of all shapes and sizes. As a young boy imagines his goldfish bowl spilling out into a vast ocean, we join him in this journey through the underwater world, meeting plenty of friends along the way. Ringo Starr’s words lend a playful voice to this well-loved song, one that you can listen along to with the accompanying CD. We think the pictures of kids swimming after sea turtles, hunting for buried treasure and simply lolling about on the waves  are a true treat for the senses, so desperately in need of rejuvenation this season. So, even if you can’t high tail it out of town anytime soon, Octopus’s Garden will surely get you there, in spirit and in song.

In a Nutshell: Remember when it was hot enough to go swimming? Those memories need not feel so distant, thanks to an enjoyable picture book that will take you to warmer places.
