Like me, my girls are developing a love for all things Japanese (food, culture, and of course, everyone’s favorite Hello Kitty). Unlike me, my girls do not–and I repeat, do not–play with dolls. Never had, and looking like they never will. (It breaks my own mother’s heart, but that’s a whole other story…) Because there never was a “Barbie stage” in our house, I don’t have to worry about “de-pinking” my house anytime soon. But just because my daughters are not into dressing up their playthings and sending them off to the spa in a sporty coupe, it doesn’t mean they can’t experience living in another place and all the excitement that comes along with that fantasy. For the anti-fashion-doll audience comes Kimmidoll Junior, a collectible mini doll line that lets girls express themselves as individuals and not pink-clad stereotypes. Bonnie reminds me a bit of my older daughter (“smart and full of bounce”) and, with her bunny and carrot-print kimono, is a perfect Easter basket stuffer. This year’s new Sunshine doll, while bearing no resemblance to my younger girl in appearance, shares a “bright and beautiful” way of lighting up a room (like the sun itself). Each 3 1/2-inch doll comes with its own character passport and sticker that girls will be proud to add to their backpacks, lunch bag or favorite piece of clothing. And for those who have fallen head over heels for these dolls, the Kimmidoll Junior collection also features keychains, beanbags, pencil cases, pens and other collectible accessories. So, finally, I get to see my girls playing with dolls and enjoying themselves. For that, we say, “arigato.”

In a Nutshell: Collectible dolls with  personalities as unique as your own kids. A surefire hit with the “I-don’t-play-with-dolls” crowd.
